Brehons and Brahmins, by Manchán Magan, is the first book I illustrated on my own. The 47 illustrations, like the text, are a mix of imagination, storytelling, and academic research. I wanted them to capture some of the vitality of the golden age of decorative illustration but be anchored in time by details lifted from the Bronze Age and the Indo-European migrations that connect both cultures. Bulls and sacred cows emerge from rivers, cauldrons overflow with magic, and the horse, the wheel and language—the legacy of the Pontic-Caspian Steppe—form the backbone of the project.
